Camping at Coachella in Indio is a systems problem: hot sun, dry air, long walks, dusty camp lanes, late nights, and a sleep setup that has to work again tomorrow. The short version
Coachella bag rules (checked 2026-09-25)
- Bags, backpacks, and purses up to 18" x 13" x 8.5" when fully packed are allowed. They do not have to be clear.
- Hydration packs must be empty, plastic only, and 2L or less. Refill inside at the free water stations.
- Water bottles: empty plastic, 64 oz or less. No metal, glass, or aluminum.

If you only fix five things, fix these:
- A wearable hydration system you will actually refill
- Shade or a reliable plan for getting out of direct afternoon sun
- A cold-enough sleep setup, including earplugs and a sleep layer
- A headlamp and spare power for camp-to-car walks
- Dust and cleanup basics that keep the tent livable

Coachella camping rules we checked (2026-10-18)
- No RVs. Car camping is for passenger cars, trucks and vans only. No RVs, motorhomes, trailers, buses, or vehicles with a toilet or running water.
- Bikes are OK in camping. Scooters, skateboards, hoverboards and e-scooters are not.
- No metal tent stakes and no metal mallets. Small rubber mallets are OK, so pack plastic stakes and weights.
- No gas generators, no extra car batteries and no heating appliances.
- Cooking: propane stoves are allowed in Car Camping, La Campana and Ready-Set only. No open flames, candles or tiki torches, and no cooking inside vehicles.
- No knives, cooking and steak knives included, and no scissors.
- No glass, including glass solar panels and lights, and no flashlights over 5.5 inches long.
- Canopies: branded pop-ups are banned. Everything else is allowed if it fits inside your 10 by 30 foot car camping site.

Hydration: choose the gate-friendly option first
Indio heat plus long venue walks makes hydration the first packing decision. A bottle in camp is useful, but a refillable hydropack keeps water on you when the walk gets longer than expected. Empty it if the current entry policy requires that, and confirm the permitted pocket count before arrival.
Coachella does not require a clear bag. If you still want a clear pack for other fests on your calendar, these work:

Shade and camp setup

- Reflective shade kit or a properly sized shade structure
- Plastic stakes (metal stakes are banned at Coachella), cord, and a repair fallback from Camp Tools & Repair
- Ground cover that separates dusty soil from sleeping gear
- Weights or filled water jugs on every canopy leg, since metal stakes are out and Coachella warns that high winds are common
- A soft layer that works at camp and on cool late-night walks, such as a festival pashmina
Set the shade, stake the tent, and create a shoe-and-dust zone before hanging lights. That order protects the parts of camp you need for sleep.
Dust, sun, and cleanup
Coachella is not a playa event, but dry camp roads still put grit on shoes, bedding, eyes, and electronics. Pack a small cleanup pouch instead of trying to solve every dusty surface with your shirt.
- Sunglasses, hat, and sunscreen you can reapply
- UV detection stickers if visual reapply reminders help
- Neck gaiter for sun and light dust
- Sealed dust goggles for windy dirt roads
- Small sand brush, wipes, and sealed bags for dusty clothes
- A fitted dust barrier sheet for a cot or twin pad
Prioritize comfort and cleanup rather than packing a huge “just in case” pile. Buy gaps only after the water, shade, and sleep systems are covered.
Lights, power, and the walk back
After a late set, camp rows blur together. Keep one light on your body and one backup in camp.
- Headlamp for tent, bathroom, and camp tasks
- Power bank with cables in a labeled pouch
- Optional USB bike lights if you bring a bike. Bikes are allowed in camping; scooters and skateboards aren't.
- A small lantern for shared cooking and sorting gear
- One visible camp marker that does not violate venue or fire rules
Top off the power bank before heading to the venue. Pack the headlamp where you can reach it without opening every bag.
Sleep and recovery
The desert can feel hot at sunset and cold before breakfast. Separate your sleep clothes from your dusty daytime clothes, and keep them in a sealed bag until you are ready to sleep.

- Insulating pad and a compact camp pillow
- Clean socks and a dedicated sleep layer
- Earplugs and an eye mask for recovery after late nights
- Simple camp food, water storage, and trash bags

Coachella camping arrival order
- Read the current camping and vehicle rules before loading the car.
- Mark the site edges and place the ground cover.
- Stake the tent and build shade before unpacking decor.
- Stage water, electrolytes, headlamp, power, and sunscreen where they are visible.
- Create a clean sleep zone and a dusty shoe zone.

- Decorate only after the systems work.
