We've been packing for festival camps since the late '80s. The sets got longer. The sun did not get more polite.
You crawl into the tent at 3:30. It feels like you just closed your eyes. Then the fly goes white and it's 5:45 AM. That's the whole pitch for a blackout tent.
What "Dark Room" actually does
Coleman Dark Room, CORE BlockOut, Ozark Dark Rest — different names, same job: cut most of the daylight so you're not yanked awake by sunrise. Listings usually say about 90% sunlight blocked. That helps. It is not magic.
It blocks light, not heat. A dark tent in open sun still cooks. Pitch it under day shade, crack the vents when you sleep, stake the fly. If you want cave-dark, add a sleep mask. If you want cooler days, you still need a canopy.
How we pick a size
- Two people: Dark Room 4-person class (Sundome or Skydome). "4 person" on the label is really a comfy 2.
- Small crew / standing room: CORE BlockOut Instant 6 — taller, faster pitch after a long drive.
- Whole friend camp: Ozark Dark Rest 10 for budget, or Coleman Skydome Dark Room 10 if you want the brand ladder.
Industry sleep counts are optimistic. Pack for mattresses and gear, not the number printed on the box.

Finish the sleep stack
Dark fabric helps. So do plugs, a real mask, and air moving over you. These are already on the shelf — same camp that owns a blackout tent usually wants all three.

Loop Quiet Earplugs
$24.95 · Amazon Associates pick
Reusable soft plugs for sleep when the generator camp next door does not clock out.

Soft Landings Blackout Sleep Mask
$34.99 · Soft Landings
Cave-dark for your eyes when the tent fly still goes white at 5:45. Contoured cups so you’re not pressing on lashes.

Odoland Rechargeable Tent Fan
$29.99 · Amazon Associates pick
Hang it from the peak, crack the vents — dark fabric blocks light, not heat. Remote + LED for midnight camp.
Heat tips that actually matter
- Get the tent up in the shade you already own (canopy, trees, the side of a truck).
- Vent low and high so the dark fabric isn't trapping yesterday's heat.
- Guy lines before you sleep — wind finds tall cabins at dawn.
- Build the rest of the sleep stack in Pack Planner (mask, earplugs, fan).
Late nights are the point. The sun doesn't have to win every morning.
