From the pros at Dustproof Supply: We've been camping festivals since the late '80s, Dead tour first. Spring is when people actually buy gear — not the week before the gate. If your calendar runs from desert heat weekends through humid farm camps, shop once for systems that work across that stretch, not for one flyer photo.
Short on time? Map trip length and climate in the free Pack Planner, then buy the gaps — not a second of everything.

The short version
- Buy systems, not souvenirs. Water, shade, sleep, light, dust comfort — in that order.
- Clear bag first if your spring slate includes stadium or EDM gates. An opaque hiking pack fails more policies than people expect.
- Pop-ups are for milder-wind camps. Open desert high wind wants shade cloth and stakes, not a bargain canopy as your only roof.
- One good chair and one sit layer beat three cheap seats.
- Power and bike lights are spring-to-fall keepers. You'll reuse them all season.
1. Hydration that survives the gate and the heat
Spring desert weekends and city gates both punish opaque bags. Start with a clear hydropack, then add electrolytes and a hard bottle for camp.
- SoJourner clear 2L hydration pack — bag-check clear PVC, the Desert Day kit core
- SoJourner holographic 2L — fashion pack for after the gate / camp loops (opaque; not a clear-bag substitute)
- Desert Day Kit — clear pack + electrolytes + wide-mouth bottle, wired as separate Amazon listings
- Zero-sugar electrolyte packets or Soft Landings Dance Fuel — follow the label and your own health guidance
- Nalgene 32oz wide-mouth for camp refill stations

2. Shade before costumes
Spring sun at desert and Indio-style sites still cooks a bare tent. Milder farm and forest camps can use a quality pop-up if you stake and weight it. High-wind exposed desert is a different problem.
- Shade Starter Kit — reflective shade path with stakes and straps
- DIY Desert Shade Build Kit — fittings, stakes, straps, ties for a frame
- CROWN SHADES 10×10 one-push or Eurmax 10×10 commercial — milder-wind day shade only; still stake and drop for storm cells
- Aisle: Shade & Shelter
Read how to secure a pop-up in wind and how to keep a tent cool before you buy a second canopy you don't need.
3. Sit gear you'll reuse all season
- ALPS King Kong — wide mesh workhorse for car camping and forest/farm camps
- GCI Freestyle Rocker XL — rocker + side table for long hang days
- ZOMAKE waterproof picnic blanket or ZAZE 80×80 — sit layer, shade floor, muddy spring grass
- Chillbo / WEKAPO — sheltered shade only; skip open high-wind desert
4. Dust comfort (even in "spring")
Desert spring weekends still throw grit. Forest camps throw pollen and mud instead. Pack eyes and a face layer either way.
- Dust Defense Kit — goggles, gaiter, N95s, cleanup
- Sealed anti-fog goggles
- BUFF neck gaiter and a festival pashmina (or Achillea black & white)

5. Night visibility and power (buy once)
- Night Ride Kit — bike lights, headlamp, body glow (Noxgear vest, clip light, EL tape, wristbands)
- WheelBrightz + SpokeBrightz so your bike reads as you
- Anker 20K or Anker 20K 45W dual cables

6. Sun care that fits a clear bag
- Sun Bum mineral SPF 50 face stick
- SpotMyUV stickers so you remember to reapply
- Wide-brim chinstrap hat
What not to over-buy in spring
- A third chair before you have shade and water
- A cheap pop-up as your only high-wind desert roof
- Five fashion hydropacks and zero clear ones if your gates require see-through
- Decor before sleep, light, and trash plan
FAQ
Is this only for desert fests? No. The same systems cover humid farm camps and forest weekends — you just weight rain and mud higher and dust lower. Use the Pack Planner for climate defaults.
