The Imperial Sand Dunes, better known as Glamis, are the largest mass of sand dunes in California, running more than 40 miles along the southeast corner of the state. The dust and blowing sand there are no joke, so here's our kit, plus the official rules that catch first-timers.
Permits and the season
- BLM requires a recreation permit from October 1 through April 15 each year.
- Weekly permits are $55 in advance or $70 on site; season permits are $185. Buy online at isdpermits.net.
- The permit is for the primary street-legal vehicle you drive in, displayed in the windshield, and it is non-refundable.
Rules that catch people out
- Every vehicle, including motorcycles, needs a whip mast reaching 8 ft from the ground with a 6 x 12 inch red or orange flag.
- 15 mph within 500 ft of Highway 78, Grays Well Road, Gecko Road and the Gecko and Roadrunner access roads.
- No saving camp spots for others.
- No glass beverage containers at all.
- Quiet hours 10pm to 6am, generators included.
- No sewage dumping, and a 14-day camping limit.
- Only small tent or awning stakes go in the ground; no metal poles or pipes.
- UTV/ROV riders need helmets and belts; ATV riders of any age need a helmet.
