Desert off-road racing kicks up more dust than most festivals ever see. Race vehicles, chase trucks and spectator traffic churn the same fine desert grit we fight at desert music festivals, only all day and with a lot more horsepower behind it. This is our dust kit for spectators and camp crews heading to events like King of the Hammers.
King of the Hammers 2027: what we verified
The official site, kingofthehammers.com, lists King of the Hammers 2027 as Jan 21 – Feb 6, on public lands in Johnson Valley, California. Schedules, camping and ticket details change, so check the official site before you book or pack. We'll keep this guide pointed there rather than repeating details we can't confirm.
Why off-road dust is different
- It moves. Every passing vehicle sends up a fresh cloud, so dust isn't just a windy-afternoon problem.
- It's long-day exposure. Spectating means hours out on the course, not a quick walk between stages.
- Winter desert swings. Late January and early February in the high desert can mean cold nights, so pack layers along with sun gear.
Our off-road dust kit
Eyes: sealed goggles
Sunglasses let dust in around the edges. We pack sealed foam goggles: the Sealed Anti-Fog OTG Dust Goggles fit over glasses, and the Yellow / Amber Lens pair helps in flat late-day light. Bring the Clear Lens pair for after dark around camp.
Face: gaiter for all day, mask for the worst of it
A BUFF EcoStretch Neck Gaiter is the easy everyday layer for dust and sun. When a big cloud rolls through, we reach for a sealed mask; our pick is the 3M N95 10-Pack (8511). Follow the maker's fit instructions.
Sun and skin
The desert sun is still strong in winter. A Wide-Brim Chinstrap Sun Hat stays on in the wind, plus SPF 50 Sport Sunscreen and SPF lip balm.
Keep your camp and gear clean
- Sealed 62-Qt Dust Bin for clean clothes and bedding.
- Gallon slider bags for phones, cameras and snacks.
- Rechargeable air duster and a horsehair dust brush for cameras, radios and boots.
- Dustpan & brush for the tent or trailer floor.
Want it in one go? Our Dust Defense Kit rounds up goggles, gaiter, N95s and tent cleanup, and the full range lives in Dust Goggles & Masks.
