Bass Coast & Shambhala Packing List: Canada PNW Forest Camping

Camper sitting outside a green dome tent at a festival campsite

Bass Coast (Merritt, BC) and Shambhala (Salmo, BC) sit in Canada’s PNW forest camping lane: cooler nights, rain risk, muddy paths, river/forest microclimates, and long, late music days. This combined packing list covers the shared systems — then notes where the two diverge.

Bass Coast and Shambhala rules we checked (2026-10-18)

  • Shambhala bikes: pedal bikes are encouraged. Bring a lock; the racks are Downtown. Minibikes, ATVs, dirt bikes and golf carts are banned, and e-bikes are an exception to the electric vehicle ban.
  • Shambhala generators: all banned, including generators built into RVs.
  • Shambhala cooking: propane or butane camp stoves are OK. BBQs, hibachi-style stoves, propane heaters, propane fire pits and campfires are not, and liquid fuel like white gas is banned.
  • Bass Coast: BBQs and camp stoves are OK, but no open flames or propane fire pits. Stand-alone generators aren't permitted. RVs with built-in generators are, run sparingly and not at night. We didn't find a bike rule in its FAQ, so check before you bring one.

Shared PNW forest realities

Forget alkaline playa dust as your main villain. Here the bosses are moisture, cold overnight, mud, and dark treelines. You still want light dust/face comfort for dry dirt roads — but rain shells, dry bags, and sleep insulation carry more of the weekend.

Cross-border tip: if you are driving from the US, confirm what you can legally bring (food, sprays, batteries) before the border — we do not give legal advice; check official sources.

Rain, mud & dry-kit discipline

Must-have

  • Real rain jacket (hood that stays put)
  • Waterproof footwear + sealed spare socks
  • Dry bags / heavy zip bags for sleep clothes and electronics
  • Tent footprint + rainfly strategy — Tents
  • Extra stakes and cord for soft soil — Camp Tools & Repair · repair kit

Nice-to-have

  • Compact tarp for cooking vestibule
  • Camp towel that actually dries
  • Separate “wet bin” at the tent door

Cold nights & layered sleep

BC forest nights punish cotton-only sleepers.

Must-have

  • Sleeping bag / quilt with margin below forecast low
  • Insulating pad
  • Merino or synthetic sleep baselayer kept in a dry bag
  • Beanie + warm socks dedicated to night

Comfort gear: Camp Chairs & Comfort.

Lights for forest dark

Canopy + late sets = black camp rows.

Must-have

  • USB headlamp
  • Bike lights if you bring a bike. Shambhala encourages them; check Bass Coast's current rules.
  • Power bank with a sunset charging ritual
  • Soft lantern for shared camp

Shop: Bike & Camp Lights. Kit pick: Night Ride Kit.

Hydration & day heat (still counts)

Afternoons can warm up even when nights are cold.

Must-have

  • Hydration pack or large bottles
  • Electrolyte packets for multi-day dancing (follow label)
  • Water storage that will not freeze your morning routine if nights are near cold

Collection: Hydration & Cooling.

Shade & sun patches

Forest camps still have blazing clearings.

Shade collection: Shade & Canopies. Kit pick: Shade Starter Kit.

Camp kitchen for cool weather

  • Stove that lights in damp air — Camp Kitchen
  • Hot meal / tea plan for 3 a.m. returns
  • Bear-aware / critter-aware food storage habits for your site rules

Bass Coast vs Shambhala — pack deltas

Dust Dirt roads + dancefloor grit Similar, often less “desert”

Both map cleanly in Pack Planner under PNW / forest camping. Enable rain likely, cold nights, and bike nights if you ride after dark.

Border & battery logistics (practical)

  • Keep lithium power banks in carry-accessible bags if flying; check airline rules.
  • Label cables in one pouch so camp mates stop borrowing your only USB-C.
  • Photograph your site markers / flag before first night so you can find camp when you are tired.
  • Pack a small trash-out system early — PNW forest sites reward tidy camps and punish “we will deal with it later.”

These are the unsexy items that show up again and again in “what I wish I packed” threads — which is why we also wrote a dedicated wish-list packing guide.

Bass Coast and Shambhala in an RV or van

At Shambhala, camping with or in your vehicle is a paid Vehicle Pass upgrade. Starlight is for camperized vehicles only, meaning an RV, trailer or van with a permanent bed built in, and anything over 20 feet total counts as oversized. Sunshine lets you camp with or in a vehicle or trailer, with no power. The catch is that Shambhala bans every generator, including the one built into your RV, so plan on batteries, solar and a cold fridge strategy.

Bass Coast allows RVs with built-in generators if you run them sparingly and not at night. Check its current vehicle camping passes before you book a rig.

Why we'd take a rig to either ranch: rain, mud and cold nights are the bosses, and a camperized van or RV is a dry bed that doesn't depend on your tent seams. Start with our guide to festival camping with an RV or a car, and for Shambhala passes and rental tips see our Shambhala RV and camper camping guide.

FAQ

Can I use a desert dust kit at Bass Coast / Shambhala? Parts yes (gaiter, optional goggles). Rebuild the core around rain, mud, and cold sleep first.

Do I need reflective Aluminet-style shade in the forest? Useful in clearings and for radiant heat on clear days. Prioritize waterproof shelter first.

What battery rule saves the weekend? Charge lights and the power bank at sunset — not after you are already cold and tired.

Where are the “I wish I brought” items? See Festival packing list: things people wish they brought.
